i just went and brought one yesterday ....(((on the way to the wedding ...lol)))..... a dell that is only 30months old .....i got the monitor, the tower, mouse and key board for $450 .....i got it because we are constantly sharing the one puter in our house ....and the kids seem to need it more and more for assignments .......i am not going to hook it up to the net .....just so the kids can do their homework ...and i will transfer some of the kids games to it

We also have added our name to the waiting list to get a laptop grant can take this O.S with him and he might be able to Skype and get to speak to each other a little more .......the other night i need to phone grant ...we spoke for 22 min and it cost me $76 ...so we don't ring very often ...actually it is quite rare

So i am happy with our bargain ....

There is some fellow up here that has a contract with the gov, he installs and sets up the new puters ......takes the old ones home ...reformats them ..... then he buys them off the government as a bulk bundle ...then sells them when he has removed all the crap off them

What a great deal Sammi. I am sure your kids are stoked to not have to share the one computer now. Hope that you are able to get a laptop as well before too long.:eek: on your phonebill. It will be great if you can start using SKYPE to stay in touch once you manage to get a laptop.

oh I hear to on the cost of calls, when Shane was in The Gulf we never phoned each other, we had to wait for his free 5 minute call every 14 days out of port, ( it doesnt mean every 14 days, it means if he goes into port the count starts again!!) some guys had multipul thousand $$ phone bills

How good are the gov comps? we were looking at a new one to replace my lap top (its almost 6 yrs old and has had drinks spilt on it 3 or 4 times:o) and I had a figure of about $1000 but after looking at them on saturday we are looking at closer to $2000!! and thats just too much

I am about to buy a lap top and DR Rob will hopefully guide me in the right direction.
Harvey Norman have compaq Presario CQ40 $598 after cash back
AMD sempron 2.1 GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, DVD burner, 14.1" screen, windows vista...

now this means jack to me but I like the price ;) and besides, I only need to use it to chat to you lot, pay my bills on line, save my pics on a USB and upload images for the site.... what more would I need... any ideas

the guy we spoke to at HN helped to explain a lot of things, now from memory (no pun inteded hehe)
2.1 GHz = how fast the computer reconises programs (ie speed)
2GB RAM = Random Access Memory
160GB HDD = no idea lol

Shane needs a graphics card so he can play his fligh sim too. The HDD we looked at was a Compaq too, but it was $1400 and then another $400 - $500 on top of that for the screen. I have told him though that if he wants his flight sim on the puter he can pay for the larger screen, got to get him to help out somehow lol (I really do want the bigger screen though =) )

Someone told me though to save money have someone build you a computer, the hard thing is I dont know enough to walk in there and say this is what I want please build it for me.

oh and did you know that there is a new windows program coming out in Oct this year? If we go with the HDD we were looking at it will come with a free upgrade or something. I alsed the guy if one was better then the other and I think basically he was saying it was personal choice, he has been using Vista for a while and now finds it confusing to go to XP.

Girls if I can put my two cents worth in, always go for a generic brand, definately never buy CompaQ because when they need fixing they will cost you multi dollars. Aaron is a techie and we have always had generic comps so he can fix them himself if needs be.

Those specs don't sound too bad Lorrie. If running Vista you don't want anything less that 2GB as Vista needs that as a minimum just to operate properly. Anything less than that and you will find it runs slower.

Like like I also like my XP compared to Vista. So many people have been frustrated with trying to use Vista and are eagerly awaiting the new Windows programme to see if that is going to be an improvement. Apparently you will have the chance to download the new Windows for free until the end of August and then use it for 12 months until you are forced to pay to upgrade to it permanently.

I have an HP Desktop and Daryl and Zac both have Acer laptops. I will not be purchasing another HP. Their customer service is shocking. Not the least bit helpful. The laptops get a real work out on a daily basis and never had any issues with with them. They cost around the $500.00 mark after cash back.
